Does the UMA have a feature to filter out spikes?
The Alpha Trader UMA by virtue of being a moving average will absorb spikes however if the spike is so large or there is for an example a large gap the data series can be skewed by that data event. The effect will be seen in the plot from smooth to a larger move - if for example the close does not come back within line of the prior closes before the spike or gap - this can cause a choppy line instead of normal smooth. A ma smaller period will show more chop and a larger period will show less chop and react less to spikes and provide a smoother line but will lag more on reversals. Also the type of data series you are using will also smooth out spikes or show them - for example 30minute versus a range 10 or tick 150.
By hands on chart time and experimenting in different data series and settings - So you will be able identify a data series and line - setting profile that works for you.
The UMA also has rules for switching on the signals. Add the indicator to a chart and view the indicator settings in the indicator list . Explore the parameter descriptions by selecting a parameter and reading the description in the lower right hand pane. Change a parameter and click apply to see the effect of each parameter change.
